Introducing Opti-Diesel

The fuel additive with the potential to help save the planet

  • Secretary of State asked to consider impact of wider use

A Yorkshire environmental business has asked Government to examine their fuel catalyst which tests confirm has a significant impact on reducing harmful emissions (CO, NOx and PM) and improving the efficiency of diesel engines.

Opti-Diesel, a fuel catalyst which increases the burning efficiency of diesel fuel, has been in development for the past decade. With roots in the United States, it has been nurtured in the United Kingdom and tested around the world.

The product – which acts as a combustion catalyst – has been found to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides by as much as 99 per cent.

A series of rigorous tests were carried out in South Africa by a global mining firm in 2016. Introducing Opti-Diesel into a number of their vehicles and stationary equipment reduced the emission of nitric oxide (NO) by 99 per cent, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by 55 per cent and carbon monoxide (CO) by 75 per cent. Particulate matter (PM) was also recorded to have reduced by 47 per cent.

These results have been reinforced by further testing in the UK at Collett & Sons, a specialist transport logistics company based in Halifax in West Yorkshire, during 2017. An opacity/smoke test recorded on a DAF tractor unit with a EURO 6 engine (the latest and cleanest standard) saw smoke reduced by 50 per cent (from 0.02 to 0.01). A Scania vehicle with a EURO 5 engine recorded a reduction in smoke of 77 per cent (from 0.22 to 0.05).

An extended trial is currently taking place with ASDA at one of their distribution centres to determine the impact of adding Opti-Diesel. 90 of their lorries are using the additive in a six-month trial which will examine the impact on their fuel consumption and emissions.

While, a series of rigorous tests on a passenger vehicle by the world-renowned UK-based Emissions Analytics in early 2017 showed a car with a Euro 6 specification engine recorded an average reduction in unburnt hydrocarbons of 50 per cent. Under certain operating conditions, an improvement of fuel consumption of up to 13.3 per cent was achieved resulting in a reduction in CO2 emissions of 12.3 per cent.

Details of the test results are being made public for the first time at a time when there is more focus than ever on the impact of emissions from diesel vehicles in the UK and around the world.

Ted Dickin, a Yorkshire farmer and entrepreneur, leads the team behind Opti-Diesel and has travelled the world in his efforts to prove its potential.

The 74-year old, who came to national attention in 2005 for developing a product that was 99 per cent effective in destroying the H5N1 avian flu virus, said:

“Having been working on the development of Opti-Diesel for ten years, we are excited by the latest test results which vindicate our view that this product has the potential to be a game-changer for reducing harmful emissions into the earth’s atmosphere.

“At a time when there is more focus than ever on the gases produced by vehicles, with more fines for pollutants, an ever-decreasing amount of fossil fuels and ever-increasing amount of pollutants in the atmosphere, Opti-Diesel both saves money and we truly believe has the potential to help save the planet.”

Opti-Diesel is a low hazard material that is easy to use, requires no change to tanks and has no impact on existing emissions controls system or engine wear. Simply added directly to fuel, it can be used in small amounts poured directly into a vehicle’s fuel tank, or dispensed into bulk tanks when deliveries are made.

Its impact can be seen almost immediately. Within 400 miles, an improvement in fuel consumption and reduction in harmful emissions has been recorded in the real life tests.

It is being produced in the UK by Grotech Production Ltd at their 12,000 square foot factory in Goole, East Yorkshire.

Leading fuel efficiency and emissions reduction specialist Dr Michael Coyle, who has worked for both the UK and overseas governments, is one of those who has been advising on testing and developing the product.

Dr Coyle began his career as a HGV technician and driver before progressing through the logistics industry. He has a BSc (Hons) in Transport and Distribution, a MSc in Operational Research and a PhD in Optimising the Fuel Efficiency of Large Goods Vehicle Fleets.

In the UK, Dr Coyle is one of the founders of the safe and fuel efficient driving (SAFED) standard, was an advisor to several of the UK Governments Fuel Economy Advisor (FEA) schemes and a technical advisor on several best practice guides. He said:

“The impact of Opti-Diesel upon fuel consumption and emissions is dramatic, as evidenced by the records produced during the live testing that has taken place over the last 18 months in a range of different engines, operating under different conditions.

“This is an exciting product, proven to both improve fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines. I am more than happy to discuss the opportunity for trials with anyone who would like to know more.”
